About the Amsterdam ArenA
The Amsterdam ArenA is the largest stadium in the Netherlands and home to the national football club, AFC Ajax. The Dutch national football team plays international matches in the stadium, and the ArenA accommodates various additional events like concerts, dance festivals and business conferences.
Sustainability is an integral part of Amsterdam ArenA strategy. Its sustainability programme is directed by the ‘Platform for a Sustainable ArenA’ (Dutch abbreviation: PDA), and ArenA staff are responsible for realising the project called ‘Amsterdam ArenA. Naturally Sustainable’. In a continuous dialogue with stakeholders, organizers and employees, we are striving to enhance the sustainability of the ArenA.

Reporting profile
This sustainability report covers 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014. This reporting period corresponds with the annual financial reporting period. The topics this report covers were selected from the sustainability report for 2012/2013. This sustainability report was prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), level C.
Scope of the report
The main objective of the Amsterdam ArenA is to achieve net carbon neutrality in the field of energy in 2015. For this purpose, we focus on issues that we can control, including reducing CO2 emissions created ‘under the roof’ of the ArenA. This report shows the progress the ArenA has made because of this commitment. The base for reporting and comparison purposes is set at the 2009/2010 tax year.
CO2 emissions calculations follow the requirements of GRI indicator EN16 and total energy consumption. Please click here to download the GRI table.
The sustainability report is an important step for the ArenA, highlighting and recording our sustainability ambitions. We present the progress achieved in the sustainability programme both in informative articles and expressed in figures for various KPI’s (key performance indicators).
In zowel informerende artikelen als actuele cijfers van verschillende KPI’s (Key performance Indicators) laten we de voortgang zien van het duurzaamheidsprogramma.
Themes
Our efforts to enhance the sustainability of the stadium focus on six themes under our control. The main themes are:
- energy;
- natural resources;
- purchasing;
- Living Lab.
Other themes are:
- stakeholders;
- impact on the environment.
The scope of the themes includes such aspects as promotion, training and raising awareness. The ArenA plays a significant role as an initiator and a platform. We aim to lead by example, to be an icon in the field of sustainability and provide a platform for organizations who share this commitment.
